BSH Continental selects TNT as its Logistics operator

TNT Logistics, one of the largest logistics companies in the world, has just won another contract in the electric and electronics sector, this time in the kitchen appliances segment, which includes ovens, purifiers, fridges, freezers, washing machines and microwave ovens. TNT was chosen to organise BSH Continental's internal logistics for the cooking (ovens) plant in a selection process that lasted around ten months. BSH Continental is connected to the German companies Bosch and Siemens, which make household appliances in Brazil under the brand names Bosch and Continental.TNT will manage internal logistics at the Mooca plant located in Sao Paulo. Activities include receipt of inputs, internal movement of materials, raw material inventory control and line supply. According to Marcelo Kuniyoshi, BSH's logistics supervisor, this is the first step towards an extensive outsourcing project for BSH's logistics operations. The idea is to extend the experience to other industrial plants within the company. "We chose a company the size of TNT already thinking of the possibility of extending the project. We sought a partner that could grow with us in this activity", says the supervisor. "By outsourcing logistics operations we can focus on our own business", he adds.
Other factors contributed to the contract with TNT such as proven expertise in internal movement and feeding of the production line, capability in redesigning internal processes, investment capability, technological innovation and reduction of operational costs.
With this contract TNT strengthens its presence in the electric and electronics sector in addition to its present contracts with Xerox and Embraco. "This new contract consolidates our efforts in the electronics and consumer product sectors and is a reference for TNT in Brazil; the company already has a strong presence in the kitchen appliances segment in other countries. We intend to act strongly in this segment; we believe we can add significant value not only to internal movement and line supply but also to milk-run activities, storage of finished products and distribution and management of parts and accessories", says André Chiarini, TNT's electronics and consumer products director.
These activities will take place in a 32 thousand square metre area within BSH Continental, for which TNT has invested in the acquisition of equipment. Throughout 2003 we anticipate further investment in information technology to implement bar code and control systems.
