Sweet success for TNT Network Logistics

TNT Network Logistics has won a £4 million, three year contract with Toms UK for the warehousing and distribution of confectionery throughout the UK.The implementation of the contract has gone so smoothly that TNT has already been awarded another section of Toms' business - handling exports of confectionery from the UK to the rest of the world.
Toms UK is a subsidiary of Toms Group, the largest confectionery company in Denmark. The company expanded last year with the acquisition of Parrs Quality Confectionery, based in Poole, and has announced that it plans to acquire other UK confectionery producers - with the aim of achieving UK sales of £100 million by 2005.
TNT Network Logistics Managing Director, David Bermingham, says: "Our solution, combining dedicated trunking with shared-user warehousing and onward distribution, offered Toms the flexibility and cost effectiveness they need."
TNT trunks the confectionery from Toms' factories in Blackpool and Liverpool to its multi-user hub in Bryn, near Wigan. There the product is picked and packed into loads for delivery to Toms' retail and wholesale customers.
"Our first month of operation was such a success that Toms has now entrusted us with their export traffic as well," says Mr Bermingham. TNT loads an average of two sea containers a week and handles all the export documentation.
Toms UK manufactures a variety of well known brands, including Mojo chews, Traffic Light Lollipops and Princess Marshmallows, as well as supplying many of the major multiples with own brand confectionery. It also distributes the premium range of Anthon Berg chocolates and liqueurs and the sugar free mint O\Zon, which are produced by the parent company in Denmark.
John Smith, Supply Chain and Logistics Manager for Toms, says: "We are very pleased with the services levels TNT Network Logistics is achieving - our customers tell us they have noticed the improvement since TNT took over.
"We have plans to expand our business significantly in the UK and to achieve that we need the guarantee of service excellence that TNT Network Logistics can give us. I look forward to both of us growing our businesses through this partnership."
